We are delighted to announce that the Register of Irish Sign Language Interpreters (RISLI) is open for applications to Irish Sign Language (ISL) interpreters to register. The register and quality assurance scheme will assist in maintaining high standards of interpreting in Ireland.
Irish Sign Language Act:
Section 7 of the Irish Sign Language Act 2017 provides as follows:
A court of public body, in compliance with its obligations under this Act, shall not engage the services of a person providing Irish Sign Language interpretation unless the person’s competence has been verified by having been accredited in accordance with an accreditation scheme funded by the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection
The way to have your qualifications verified is to apply for registration. It is important to note that if you are not registered, a court or public body will not be in a position to engage your services.
How to Apply:

Key Dates:
- To ensure you are included on the register for January 1st 2021, we ask you to submit a complete application between 2nd and 15th December 2020.
- All applications received before 15th Dec December will be processed and put before the Registration Panel (or sub-committee of that Panel) for consideration. Successful applicants will be put on the Register in time for the commencement of the Irish Sign Language Act.
- Applications received after 15th Dec will be processed in January 2021

The contents of these policy papers may be amended from time to time.
Other documents that will form part of the Registration System are currently being finalised, and will be shared with you shortly. These include:

- Skills Checks – Operations
Many of the policy papers referred to above may be converted into rules, guidelines or procedures in the months ahead, if and when bye-laws are made. Please note that by joining the register, you will be expected to comply with and adhere to any policies, bye-laws, codes, rules, guidelines or procedures.
