Board member with Experience in the Deaf Community and/or Sign Language Interpreting
Sign Language Interpreting Service (SLIS) works to ensure that Deaf people can participate as full and equal citizens in Irish society, with easy access to quality sign language interpreting services. SLIS is funded and supported by the Citizens Information Board (CIB), and is also tasked by the National Disability Inclusion Strategy 2017-2021, to support the social inclusion of Ireland’s Deaf community.
The Role:
Sign Language Interpreting Service (SLIS) is seeking a board member with experience in the Deaf Community and/or Sign Language Interpreting to join our board. The candidate should ideally have in-depth knowledge of the deaf community, culture and/or expertise and experience in sign language interpreting.
The role is to advise and support the Board in the fulfilment of the Board’s financial and legal responsibilities and on issues relating to the deaf community and the interpreting sphere such as reviewing guidelines, best practice and national policy.
This is an exciting opportunity as SLIS has a new strategy for 2020-2024 and is expanding and growing year upon year. There is also scope to join sub-committees of SLIS including, governance, HR, finance and IRIS and experience in these areas would be of great benefit to SLIS and/or any other additional experience relating to membership of a board.
Board Requirements
There will be approximately 6 meetings per annum, plus attendance at sub-committee meetings, as required. These are held in the SLIS offices in Deaf Village Ireland, Dublin 7. However, due to Covid-19, board meetings are being held virtually at present.
This is a voluntary board and as a result no fees are paid to board members. Travel and subsistence expenses will be paid to members where applicable.
Together with preparatory reading for meetings and follow up activities and information analysis, the total commitment could be up to 10 – 12 hours per month.
Each director of a board shall be appointed to serve for a term of up to three years and may only serve for a maximum of two terms either consecutively or cumulatively.
